Thanks, 750 Words!

At the beginning of June I began using a site called 750 Words. For the full description, look here. The tl;dr is it’s based on the idea of morning pages from “The Artist’s Way.” Write 3 pages a day, unedited and uncensored. The idea is that if you do this it helps to clear your mind and get the ideas flowing for the rest of the day. 750 words keeps your writing private. It’s just for you to view. I joined 750 Words years ago, but it’s been quite a while since I’ve used it. There are a number of testimonials about how it has helped people deal with depression and imposter syndrome and all kinds of things. For me, I know it just makes me feel better if I do a bit of writing, even if I don’t share it. I wrote about two weeks’ worth of writing this month and then I started thinking that I could kill two birds with one stone and use some of my word count to write in my blog. I’d write it in 750 words and then copy it over to my blog once I’ve hit my goal. I found that I tend to be more successful in writing on 750 words than I am in writing on my blog.

As Dorothy Parker said: I hate writing, but I love having written. My undergraduate degree is in writing and it’s a part of who I am, I just rarely stretch my writing muscles in ways beyond snail mail and Facebook status updates. But for now, 750 Words feels good.
